Cybersecurity may be the fastest-growing career field today. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that the field will grow by 28 percent between 2016 and 2026 (average growth for all jobs is about 7 percent). By 2022, the global cybersecurity workforce shortage has been projected to reach upwards of 1.8 million unfilled positions.

What is PowerUp: Cyber Games?

CyberUp’s PowerUp: Cyber Games is geared to inspire middle school and high school students toward this lucrative and in-demand career field. PowerUp: Cyber Games is a unique cybersecurity competition designed to teach its participants to solve computer security problems, and capture and/or defend computer systems.

Students will compete monthly utilizing an online platform from the convenience of their school, home, or library computers. Students will also have access to online curriculum to help them prepare for the competition. Students will compete on a Thursday, Friday, OR Saturday for a 3-hr. consecutive block. Students will earn points during each month’s competition. The team or person with the most points in their division by April 2021 will be the winner.

During the May Award Banquet, we will recognize the first, second, and third place teams in each division. CyberUp will also celebrate the students’, teachers’, and volunteers’ accomplishments during the season.

Timeline

Before August 1st, 2020 – Early Bird Registration ($200 per child for the season)
August 1st – Oct 8th, 2020 – Open Registration ($250 per child for the season)
Oct 9th, 2020 – Registration cutoff date
October 12 – Nov 11, 2020 – Prepare for competition

Ways for your child to participate

School Team

If your child competes on a school team they will need a teacher to lead the team of up to 4 students. The teacher will coordinate in-person practices and competition times. Some teams practice during the school day, while others will choose to practice after school, like a club or a sport. During practices the teacher and industry professional volunteer will walk through appropriate lesson plans to help the team be successful for that month’s challenge.

Individually

If your child decides to compete individually, they will still have access to practice materials and supplemental learning materials, however it will be as an individual self-paced learning track. All of the practicing and competition days will be completed virtually.

Independent Team

Your child will register and create an account. They will then either become a team captain and create a team for others to join by sending out an invite link or they join a team using an invite link from another team member. The students will form a team of up to 4 students. The students will be responsible for coordinating their own practice and competition days and times. They will still have access to practice materials and supplemental learning materials, however it will be as an individual self-paced learning track.

How to register your child

Step 1

Parent creates an account.

Step 2

Parent completes Parental Consent Form.

Step 3

Submit payment for the season (October 2020 – May 2021) of $200 per child for an early bird registration rate or $250 per child if registring after August 1st, 2020 unless your child is sponsored through the school on a school-affiliated team.
